Building C(sp3) Molecular Complexity on 2,2′-Bipyridine and 1,10-Phenanthroline in Rhenium Tricarbonyl Complexes

The reactions of [Re(N-N)(CO)₃(PMe₃)]OTf (N-N=2,2′-bipyridine, bipy; 1,10-phenanthroline, phen) compounds with tBuLi and with LiHBEt₃ have been explored. Addition to the N-N chelate took place with different site-selectivity depending on both chelate and nucleophile. Thus, with tBuLi, an unprecedented addition to C5 of bipy, a regiochemistry not accessible for free bipy, was obtained, whereas coordinated phen underwent tBuLi addition to C2 and C4. Remarkably, when LiHBEt₃ reacted with [Re(bipy)(CO)₃(PMe₃)]OTf, hydride addition to the 4 and 6 positions of bipy triggered an intermolecular cyclodimerization of two dearomatized pyridyl rings. In contrast, hydride addition to the phen analog resulted in partial reduction of one pyridine ring. The resulting neutral Re^I products showed a varied reactivity with HOTf and with MeOTf to yield cationic complexes. These strategies rendered access to Re^I complexes containing bipy- and phen-derived chelates with several C(sp³) centers.     

Temperature and Solvent Dependent Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenolysis in Aromatic Aldehydes and Ketones Via Ammonium Formate

Temperature control and solvent specification are used to reduce aromatic aldehydes and ketones to intermediate alcohols rather than methylene derivatives using HCO₂NH₄ as a catalytic hydrogen transfer agent. A mechanism for the catalytic reduction is proposed.     

Electric field assisted annealing effects on microstructure and ionic conductivity in ceria/YSZ oxide heterostructures

The effect of electric field assisted annealing on the microstructure, composition and ionic conductivity properties in CeO₂/YSZ oxide heterostructures have been investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. Amorphization–recrystallization steps were performed with and without external electric field of strength 10?MV/cm along three different orientations: in-plane (YZ), normal (X) and 45° resultant (XY) with respect to the oxide heterointerfaces. The microstructural and compositional differences at the interfaces and in the interior of the oxide heterolayers were evaluated and were found to show a clear correlation with the orientations of the applied field. In particular, the XY configuration displayed a compressive lattice strain of ～9% along with a reduced oxygen vacancy concentration when compared to the others. Ionic density profiles suggest pronounced segregation (～60% higher compared to the average value in the interior) of yttrium ions closer to the YSZ/CeO₂ interface for the XY configuration. Other configurations exhibit minimal to no such variations. These microstructural differences are found to affect the number of mobile charge carriers and the activation barriers associated with ionic migration through the oxide lattice and consequently, influence the ionic conductivity.

Biaxial bulge testing of polymeric sheets

The through thickness total strains of hydrostatically bulged domes of materials are usually determined indirectly. The in-plane circumferential strains are readily measured, and then constancy of volume is invoked to determine the “missing” or unknown strain. Some of our recent work with polymers has shown that volume constancy in large-scale deformation does not hold so that the usual computations of stress and strain during bulging of sheet may be in error. We describe an electrical device that reduces such errors by directly measuring the through thickness (and, thus, the thickness “strain”) for nonmetallic materials.     

Structural changes in data communication in wireless sensor networks

Wireless sensor networks are an important technology for making distributed autonomous measures in hostile or inaccessible environments. Among the challenges they pose, the way data travel among them is a relevant issue since their structure is quite dynamic. The operational topology of such devices can often be described by complex networks. In this work, we assess the variation of measures commonly employed in the complex networks literature applied to wireless sensor networks. Four data communication strategies were considered: geometric, random, small-world, and scale-free models, along with the shortest path length measure. The sensitivity of this measure was analyzed with respect to the following perturbations: insertion and removal of nodes in the geometric strategy; and insertion, removal and rewiring of links in the other models. The assessment was performed using the normalized Kullback-Leibler divergence and Hellinger distance quantifiers, both deriving from the Information Theory framework. The results reveal that the shortest path length is sensitive to perturbations.
